Screen Archive South East (SASE) is a public sector moving image archive. SASE is part of the School of Art and Media at the University of Brighton. It collects, preserves, researches and provides access to screen material related to the South East of England.
The team at SASE have been kind enough to provide some extracts of video material of Lindfield village and its people going back as far as the 1940’s. We thank them for the support and have provided links in each case to the original film stored at SASE. The archive is extraordinary. Please do visit the online resource.
Do you recognise the village in any of the extracts below? Do you recognise any people in the extracts? Are you in the extracts?! Do you have memories of the events that the films cover? Did you skate on the pond? Did you shin along the greasy pole at the Jubilee celebrations? Do you have your own home movies of any events that show the village? Do you have film or photographs that you would be willing to share with us to help us build an online resource of village views? We would love to hear from anyone with memories.
This first clip is from a film of the village celebrations of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in June 1977. The Society gifted a finger post sign at the north end of the village (which has been recently repaired by the Monday Group for us) and this speech by a village elder, Mr Tom Elder in fact, was captured by Cyril Hayworth on the day. The speech is audible if you put your sound on. See the full film at https://screenarchive.brighton.ac.uk/detail/3518/ .

During the same day in June 1977, the pond was the focus of the celebrations as a greasy pole was set-up to encourage some of the more optimistic villagers to provide some entertainment for everyone! The whole glorious day was covered by Cyril Hayworth at https://screenarchive.brighton.ac.uk/detail/3518/ .
